The 5th Congress of Young Scientists held November 26–28, 2025, brought together over 8,000 participants from 89 Russian regions and 100 countries representing 480 Russian and 44 international universities at Sirius University of Science and Technology (Sochi), was the largest in the event's history.

The Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics SB RAS was represented by a group of three research scientists: Boris Popov, PhD (geol.-mineral.), Chair of the Scientific Youth Council of IPGG, Igor Mikhaylov, PhD (Tech..), and Dmitry Melnik, PhD (geol.-mineral.).

"Attending the Congress of Young Scientists is essential for integrating into the scientific community, gaining new knowledge, and for networking," noted Boris Popov. "It also allows one to see where the science and education are currently heading. This is a unique platform where researchers, engineers, technology entrepreneurs, heads of state corporations and large technology companies meet, thus shaping the trajectory of Russia’s scientific and technological development for years to come."

The Congress agenda covered a wide range of topics—from obtaining grants to collaborating with businesses and strategic issues of management of scientific research organizations, Boris Popov says. At thematic sessions and platforms, participants explored the structure of the Russian scientific community.

Open microphones provided a special opportunity for direct dialogue between the scientific community and the government and business. The participating IPGG’s researchers marked particularly memorable presentations : by A.A. Fursenko, Aide to the President of the Russian Federation, D.N. Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, S.N. Kalmykov, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, A.G. Mazhuga, RAS Corr. Member, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education, and M.V. Kovalchuk, President of the "Kurchatov Institute" National Research Center.

At the session Open Dialogue with the State Duma, Congress participants spoke with representatives of the State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education.


Among other things scientists from IPGG SB RAS that participated in the 5th Congress of Young Scientists marked the top level of the event organization.

"The organizers of the event that attracted over 8,000 people, left unattended no small detail—from the participants' arrival and accommodation to their varied meals and engaging leisure activities," says Igor Mikhailov. "Statistics indicate a steady increase in Russian society's interest in science. The popularity and prestige of scientific activity is growing in the eyes of both high school students and older groups. Importantly, some sessions addressed the challenge of attracting and retaining young people in science. Science popularization is vital in this regard."
