The prospects of creation of a new structural unit has become one of the key agenda items of the Academic Council meeting of the Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics SB RAS. Vyacheslav Glinskikh, corr. member of RAS, Director of the Institute, provided a detailed account of a center for interdisciplinary geological and geophysical research whose creation is proposed within the Institute, to enhance IPGG’s research capacity.
The Center’s goal is to develop new research directions in geoscience and applied research, to address specialized needs and implement high-demanded, significant projects through integration of the scientific potential of the Institute’s laboratories and effective use of its material-technical base.

V.N. Glinskikh speaking at the meeting of the Academic Council of SB RAS
The Center will conduct comprehensive interdisciplinary geological and geophysical research in topical research areas, including at the request of federal ministries, regional authorities, and municipalities. Thus, environmental projects related to the study of drinking water resources in the Novosibirsk and Kemerovo regions, as well as in the Donetsk People's Republic, are envisaged as part of the future Center’s activities.
Furthermore, extensive work is planned for the search for natural hydrogen in the area of the Russian Federation, along with a large-scale revision of the historical geological data accumulated at the Institute over decades of work.
It is anticipated that the establishment of the Center for Interdisciplinary Geophysics will facilitate the implementation of major research projects to benefit Russia’s science and nation.
V.N. Glinskikh also noted that the Geologist's Day was initiated by a group of prominent Soviet geologists headed by Academician A.L. Yanshin, and established by the Decree of Presidium of the Supreme Soviet dated March 31, 1966, to commemorate the successes and achievements of Soviet geologists in the development of mineral resource base of the USSR. The Geologist's Day falls on the first Sunday of April, which is associated with the beginning of preparations for summer work and equipping for expeditions.
The occasion underlying the idea of the holiday was the discovery of the first deposits of the West Siberian petroleum province in 1966.
On the eve of Geologist's Day, some employees of IPGG SB RAS received departmental awards. The medal of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation "For Exemplary Labor and Distinction" was granted to S.V. Ershov, PhD (geol.-mineral.), lead research scientists at IPGG SB RAS. A.Yu. Belonosov, PhD (Tech.), a senior research scientist of the West Siberian Branch of IPGG SB RAS, was awarded the Acknowledgment of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation for his contributions to the development of research activities and his diligent work.
