Zhang Yucheng, an associate professor at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NIGPAS), arrived at the Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics (IPGG) SB RAS to work with his Russian colleagues for two weeks. Their joint research work focuses on the macroevolution of Late Ordovician brachiopods in the Altai Mountains and biogeographic reconstructions. The visit is scheduled under the Memorandum on the Development of Scientific Cooperation and Academic Exchange between NIGPAS and IPGG researchers, signed in 2025.

Brachiopoda is a relict group of marine benthic invertebrates with a lophophore (featured by filter feeders) and a bivalved shell. During their joint work, while investigating the paleogeographical significance of Ordovician brachiopods, scientists will identify similarities and differences between brachiopod assemblages from Ordovician sections of the Altai-Sayan folded region (Russia) and the Tarim Basin (China).

Besides, they will examine collections of Ordovician brachiopods from the Altai Mountains and discuss issues of the evolution of brachiopods, along with their morphology, taxonomic definition, and paleogeographical distribution. In addition, they plan a discussion on the updated Ordovician litho- and biostratigraphic schemes of Tarim.

In addition, prof. Zhang Yucheng will conduct a seminar on academic writing skills (in English) for postgraduate students at IPGG SB RAS. A scientific seminar on the Late Ordovician – Early Silurian stratigraphy and fossil fauna of northwestern Tarim is also planned.
