At the IPGG’s seminar on geology of sedimentary basins, Zhang Yucheng, associate professor at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NIGPAS), delivered a report on the Late Ordovician–Early Silurian stratigraphy, including information on faunal assemblages, paleoclimate and tectonic evolution of the northwestern Tarim Basin.

Specifically, Zhang Yucheng presented evidence proving the fact that the Late Ordovician mass extinction that occurred approximately 445 million years ago, was preceded by climate changes. In his research, close paleobiogeographic relationships between the Tarim, southern China, and Central Asia have also been established.
The guest researcher emphasized the importance of the obtained data for regional stratigraphic schemes, paleogeographical reconstructions, as well as for analysis of geological conditions, and evaluation of petroleum exploration potential of the Tarim Basin.

The presentation resonated well with the audience representing a number of fields of research at IPGG, including paleontology, stratigraphy, and sedimentology. The discussion involved exchange of opinions expressed by many participants, among them N.V. Sennikov, DSc (geol.-mineral.); L.A. Glinskikh, PhD (g.-m.), E.V. Lykova, PhD (g.-m.), O.T. Obut, PhD (g.-m.), D.A. Tokarev, PhD (g.-m.), R.A. Khabibulina, PhD (g.-m.), A.V. Yadrenkin, PhD (g.-m.), O.S. Urman, T.A. Shcherbanenko, and other specialists.
The joint work of scientists from Nanjing and Novosibirsk will continue within the framework of the Memorandum on the Scientific Cooperation and Academic Exchange between the two institutions – NIGPAS (China) and IPGG SB RAS (Russia).
