On April 20, the memorial scientific session dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Saks, Corr.Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, titled " the Mesozoic and Cenozoic Paleontology, Stratigraphy, and Paleogeography of Boreal Regions," began its work in Novosibirsk. The event was organized by the A.A. Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics SB RAS, Novosibirsk State University (NSU), and the Siberian Branch RAS. The event is held within the frames of the Science and Technology Decade.

Vladimir Nikolaevich Saks (1911–1979) was an outstanding Soviet geologist and a leading expert whose main research focus was on the integrated stratigraphy, paleobiogeography, and paleoecology of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic in the Boreal realm, particularly within the Russian Arctic. His research played a crucial role in the discovery of vast deposits of natural gas and oil in the lower reaches of the Yenisei River, on the Gydan Peninsula, and in the Taymyr Lowland. The research results obtained by V.N. Saks and his team of scientists provided the stratigraphic foundation for realization of exploration activities for oil and gas and subsequent development of oil and gas fields in Western Siberia.

The program of the Ninth Saks Readings includes over 70 reports from specialists based in Novosibirsk, Moscow, Tomsk, Khabarovsk, Irkutsk, Yakutsk, Saratov, Kemerovo, Yekaterinburg, Ulan-Ude, St. Petersburg, and other cities. The two major sessions scheduled for the conference are titled "Mesozoic" and "Cenozoic."

The topics covered in the presentations are related to the evolution, biodiversity, and paleoecology of the boreal biota; as well as to issues of correlation between the General stratigraphic scale (GSC) and regional stratigraphic schemes.

The reports also concern bio-, magneto-, chemo-, sequence-, and cyclostratigraphy; paleogeography and paleobiogeography; and paleoclimates. Other topics planned to be elaborated on include the structural features, formation conditions, and petroleum potential of sedimentary basins in Northern Eurasia; recent results and findings of geological research in the Arctic; and the history of Russian research into the Mesozoic and Cenozoic of boreal regions.

During the plenary session held at Novosibirsk State University, Vyacheslav Glinskikh, Corr. Member of the Russian Academy of Science, Director of IPGG SB RAS, and Aleksander Igolnikov, PhD (geol.-mineral.) head of the Center for Collective Use "Earth Evolution" at NSU, addressed the participants with welcome speeches, which was followed by presenting reports prepared by researchers from IPGG SB RAS and attending guests.

In particular, B.N. Shurygin, RAS Corr. Member, spoke about the life and achievements of V.N. Sachs, the founder of two scientific schools. The presentation by A.G. Konstantinov, DSc (geol.-mineral.) , was devoted to the Middle and Upper Triassic Boreal zonal standard.

Natalia Lebedeva, DSc (geol.-mineral.), gave a presentation on modern micropaleontological and palynological analyses of the Jurassic and Cretaceous of Siberia essentially based on the ideas of V.N. Saks. Major issues related to the revision of the regional stratigraphic chart of the Paleogene of Western Siberia were discussed by A.I. Yakovleva, DSc (geol.-mineral.), from RAS Geological Institute (GIN RAS, Moscow) in her report.

In the evening session, the venue of the joint Mesozoic-Cenozoic subsession will be at Novosibirsk State University (NSU). From April 21 to 23, the work of the Saks Readings will be continued at the Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics (IPGG SB RAS).
