On January, 28, All-Russian Scientific Conference Seismic Forward and Inverse Problems dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Academician Sergey V. Goldin's birth, started at the Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics SB RAS. The event is held as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.

The conference has been attended by researchers from academic institutions, universities, and industry professionals. The program includes over 40 presentations by speakers from Novosibirsk, Moscow, Tyumen, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Participants discuss the current state of seismic exploration methods, forward and inverse problems solution in geophysics in light of advancing the ideas laid down by Academician Sergey V. Goldin. Key topics concern with further development of the theoretical foundations of geological and geophysical exploration methods, the critical role of mathematics in geophysical modeling, and the theory and practice of exploration seismology.

Furthermore, the reports cover a wise range of topics on seismology and geomechanics; prediction of seismic source zones; geophysical data processing and complex interpretation (i.e. high-quality field surveying, and competent processing and interpretation of the obtained data); and integration of geophysical methods for solving inverse problems.

During the plenary session, scientists recalled some of Academician Goldin's scientific and organizational achievements. Opening the conference, V.N. Glinskikh, RAS Corresponding Member and Director of IPGG SB RAS, noted that Sergey V. Goldin was a talented organizer who in fact introduced interdisciplinary research by bringing together scientists from different research fields for solving complex problems. A.A. Duchkov, PhD (phys.-math.), Deputy Director of IPGG SB RAS, spoke about S.V. Goldin's fundamental contribution to solving differential equations in seismics: the theoretical methods of analysis and synthesis of digital filters and kinematic interpretation of seismograms developed by Goldin were the basis of algorithms for digital processing of seismic data.

Georgy Mitrofanov, DSc (phys.-math.), principal research scientist at IPGG SB RAS, shared his memories of the summer schools for young geophysicists that S.V. Goldin organized starting the mid-1980s ―activities that meant immersion into the exciting world of cutting-edge geophysics for students. In her recollections, L.A. Nazarova, DSc (phys.-math.), principal researcher at Chinakal Institute of Mining SB RAS, spoke about how Academician Goldin developed geomechanics.

Conference participants recalled not only Sergey Vasilyevich's scientific achievements but also his outstanding personality, teaching talent, and openness to new ideas. Part of the plenary session was held in an informal discussion format which Academician Goldin always encouraged at his seminars.

The evening session on January 28, which kicked off the conference's scientific program focusing on the development of theoretical foundations for geological and geophysical exploration methods, as well as methods for modeling and transforming geophysical observations.
