The event that brought together leading scientists from Russia and the PRC was held at Peking University. The Russian delegation included researchers from IPGG SB RAS.

The China-Russia Joint Workshop on Earth Sciences and Geodynamics was held as part of the scientific collaboration and academic exchange between the PRC and the Russian Federation. The event was organized by, among others, the School of Earth and Space Sciences at Peking University—with which IPGG SB RAS has previously established a cooperation agreement—and the Earth Sciences Center of the China-Russia Association for Fundamental Research, with which IPGG specialists also actively collaborate.

–The history of scientific collaboration between China and Russia in geosciences is both long-standing and highly fruitful, the seminar organizers noted. "Both countries possess unique geological data as well as world-class scientific personnel specializing in areas such as structural geology and tectonics, magmatism, metamorphism, sedimentation, geodynamics, mineral and energy resources, environmental evolution, and processes within the Earth system.

In the course of sessions, specialists from both countries exchanged information on the latest advancements, discussed pressing scientific issues, and new joint research opportunities. The topics included the evolution of continents, tectonics, and geodynamics—covering the Ural Orogen, the Siberian and North China Cratons, and the Central Asian Orogenic Belt.

Moreover, participants discussed subsurface processes and environmental transformations in the Arctic, as well as paleo-environmental conditions. Presentations also addressed energy resources, critical mineral raw materials, metallogeny, geothermal systems, carbon and hydrogen storage, and sustainable development.

The workshop covered a broad spectrum of cutting-edge analytical methods, geophysical imaging techniques, modeling, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies within the Earth sciences. Additionally, discussions on Russia-China collaboration aspects, including joint scientific research, fieldworks, student training programs, and partnerships were also included.

The presentations made by the IPGG SB RAS representatives covered a variety of topical subjects. Mikhail Fomin, PhD (geol.-mineral.), head of the delegation, lead researcher at the Laboratory for Geology problems, exploration and development of hard-to-recover oil fields, and IPGG’s Deputy Director—served as a co-chair for one of the sessions and gave a presentation titled "The Bazhenov Formation: The Oil Source Formations in the West Siberian Petroleum Province."

The presentation by Aleksey Popov, PhD (geol.-mineral.), head of the Laboratory of Sedimentology, concerned sedimentation conditions at the Jurassic–Cretaceous (J/K) boundary in the Anabar-Lena sedimentary basin (northern Eastern Siberia). Anton Duchkov, PhD (phys.-math.), head of the Laboratory of Dynamic Analysis in Seismology, discussed application of machine learning in the analysis of seismic data.

Evgeniy Deev, D Sc (geol.-mineral.), principal researcher at the Laboratory of Geodynamics and Paleomagnetism, gave a presentation on evidence for large paleo-earthquakes on the landscape and in sedimentary rocks of the Altai Mountains (Gorny Altai).

The workshop program concluded with a field excursion to the Hengshan–Wutai mountain region. The examined geological sites offer insights into the evolution of the Archean–Paleoproterozoic basement of the North China Craton that are of great interest to specialists across all areas of the Earth sciences.

The workshop outcomes are properly appreciated at IPGG SB RAS and viewed as effective way to enhance the knowledge base upon which integrative efforts can build. Hence, collaboration between Novosibirsk scientists and their with colleagues from Beijing will continue, with a number of major joint projects already planned.
