The Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPGG SB RAS), a federal state funded academic institution, was established pursuant to the RAS Presidium Resolution of November, 22, 2005, based on a merger of three RAS institutions —Institute of Petroleum Geology, Institute of Geophysics, and Design and Technology Institute for Environmental and Geophysical Instrument Engineering.

IPGG SB RAS succeeds the Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG), Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, founded in 1957 by Academician Andrei A. Trofimuk, a highly reputed geologists who participated in the largest pioneering discoveries, among them: oil and gas bearing West Siberian basin, the Volga-Ural and Lena-Tunguska petroleum provinces.

According to the information from IPGG Personnel Department as of 31.12.2022 the number of employees working at the IPGG SB RAS and its subsidiaries totals 772, including 174 Candidate of Sciences (PhD), 329 research scientists, 65 Doctors of Sciences,. three (3) academicians (Full Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences), and eight (8) Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The bases and directions of the IPGG scientific activity were laid down by the academicians of RAS working there at different times who also made their significant individual contributions to the Institute’s achievements : A.A. Trofimuk, N.N. Puzyrev, S.V. Goldin, N.L. Dobretsov, A.E. Kontorovich, M.I. Epov.
