The last meeting of the geology section of the Scientific Council of IPGG SB RAS was dedicated to the pre-defense and discussion of a draft of I.G. Zakiryanov’s dissertation (specialty 1.6.2: Paleontology and stratigraphy) for the Candidate of Sciences degree (equivalent to PhD) in geology and mineralogy. Ilya Zakiryanov, junior research scientists of the Sedimentology laboratory, made a presentation on the Ordovician communities of photosynthetic organisms in Gorny Altai, their stratigraphic position and role in biogenic carbonate mass accumulation.
Iliya Zakiryanov
In his talk, Iliya Zakiryanov has emphasized the scarcity of literature data on the Altai photosynthetic organisms which often act as a driver of the evolution of a rock substratum. His research is therefore set out to narrow the existing gaps.
The young researcher investigated the Ordovician key sections of Gorny Altai during several field seasons. As a result, he has collected more than 400 samples and subsequently studied them in the laboratory conditions.
The results included schematic representation of massive distribution of Ordovician photosynthetic organisms in the Gorny Altai area and identification of microfossils containing them. Iliya strongly believes that the studied fossils can be used for reconstruction of sedimentation conditions in the Altai Mountains.
The presentation by Iliya Zakiryanov's aroused great interest among the audience and received positive feedback from the experts attended: T.M. Parfyonova, PhD (geol-mineral), O.S. Dzyuba, D.Sc. (geol-mineral), D.A. Novikov, PhD (geol-mineral), B.L. Nikitenko, RAS corr.m., A.V. Timokhin, PhD (geol-mineral), L.G. Vakulenko, PhD (geol-mineral), A.V. Timokhin, PhD (geol-mineral), L.G.
