The Laboratory of Sedimentology was established within the United Institute of Geology, Geophysics and Mineralogy (UIGGM) SB RAS in 1997, as a successor of the laboratory of sedimentary formations of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG) SB RAS.
The laboratory’s priority line of research set out in the strategic development plan addresses the following major research tasks : sedimentary systems, depositional environments, post-depositional changes; reservoir properties (porosity and permeability) characterization and petrophysical analysis of petroleum reservoirs of the West Siberian plate (Paleozoic, Jurassic, Neocomian) and Siberian Platform (Upper Proterozoic, Cambrian).
The research activities of the laboratory presently include :
The Sedimentology Lab’s research in these field is often made an integrated part of the research conducted at the IPGG SB RAS laboratories with their research focuses on petroleum evolution in sedimentary basins, as well as on paleontology and stratigraphy.
In practical applications, the knowledge amassed in the Sedimentology Laboratory allows improving evaluation of rock properties and their changes under reservoir conditions and leads to a better understanding of reservoir behavior, thereby enabling optimization of a field development strategy.
