During the meeting of the Geological Section of the Scientific Council of IPGG SB RAS, Egor Metelkin, a researcher from the Laboratory of Mesozoic and Cenozoic Paleontology and Stratigraphy presented a scientific report by on his dissertation for the Candidate of Science degree in geology and mineralogy (specialty 1.6.2. Paleontology and Stratigraphy). The research work is titled “Early Cretaceous oysters (Bivalvia) in the northeastern regions of the Tethyan supra-region: morphology, systematics, stratigraphic significance and biogeography”.

E.K. Metelkin

E.K. Metelkin has revisited the issue of systematics and taxonomy ( which are nowadays facing new challenges with the introduction of new concepts and new techniques) of Early Cretaceous oysters in the northeastern margin of Tethys, and clarified their stratigraphic significance and biogeographic distribution.

The researcher says that the research results provides novel insights into oyster evolution, thus contributing to their evolutionary narrative, systematics and diversity. The results can be used to determine the geological age of oyster shell-bearing sediments within several stratigraphic ranges.

E.K. Metelkin's presentation aroused great interest among the audience. There were questions posed and opinions expressed by A.Yu. Popov, PhD (geol.-mineral.), V.V. Lapkovsky, D Sc (geol.-mineral.), D.V. Grazhdankin, D Sc (geol.-mineral.), G.G. Shemin, D Sc (geol.-mineral.), Yu. Marusin, PhD (geol.-mineral.), T.M. Parfenova PhD (geol.-mineral.) . Extensive comments given by V.A. Kashirtsev, RAS Corr.Member, I.V. Korovnikov, D Sc (geol.-mineral.), O.S. Dzyuba, D Sc (geol.-mineral.), A.G. Konstantinov, D Sc (geol.-mineral.), N.V. Sennikov, D Sc (geol.-mineral.), and I.N. Kosenko, PhD (geol.-mineral.), the scientific supervisor, offered detailed suggestions for the thesis improvement.
