A Memorandum of Understanding for developing scientific collaboration has been signed between the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NIGPAS) and the Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPGG SB RAS).
The new document replaces the previous Memorandum of Understanding signed by NIGPAS and IPGG SB RAS in 2019 with an aim to continue and develop scientific collaboration between them which has already yielded tangible results—in particular, in 2024, Russian and Chinese colleagues conducted effective qualitative fieldworks in Transbaikalia.
The purpose of the new Memorandum is to develop and expand the educational and research cooperation, as well as academic exchange between IPGG SB RAS and NIGPAS. The two institutions plan to conduct joint research projects, lectures, and conferences, and exchange of scientific information, samples, personnel, and graduate students, on a regular basis.
The project envisages joint scientific supervision of postgraduate work; organization of field trips for postgraduate students; conducting short-term courses, etc.
Scientists from Novosibirsk and Nanjing will also conduct joint research on paleontological collections and other and geological materials stored at the Center for Collective Use «Collection GEOCHRON», IPGG SB RAS, and at the NIGPAS Collection Center.
The signing of the Memorandum proceeded in two stages. First, Dr Wang Jun, Director of NIGPAS, Chinese Academy of Sciences, signed the document in Nanjing, in the presence of Nikolay Sennikov, DSc (geol.-mineral.), principal research scientist at IPGG SB RAS.

The memorandum will be effective for five years from the date of signing, that is, until the end of 2030. Both IPGG SB RAS and NIGPAS scientists are committed and look forward to fruitful cooperation.
