The Agreement signing ceremony was held at the A.A. Trofimuk Institute of Oil and Gas Geology and Geophysics SB RAS. The event was attended by the representatives of IPGG SB RAS, Northwestern University (NWU), and the government of Shaanxi Province, where the university is located in the city of Xi'an, its capital.

In his welcome speech, Director of IPGG SB RAS Vyacheslav Glinskikh, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, spoke about the long-standing relations between Russian and Chinese scholars in Earth sciences, which date back to the 1950s. At that time, Academician Andrei A. Trofimuk, the founder of the Institute played a major role in establishing relationships between the USSR and China in the field of petroleum geology (he lead joint study of China’s petroleum potential which proved true). V.N. Glinskikh also mentioned the latest insightful results of the joint work of Russian and Chinese researchers in the area of Transbaikalia - as the beginning of promising future studies and discoveries.
Xing Shanping, Vice-Secretary of the Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, in her salutation speech made a brief introduction on Shaanxi province with the emphasis on its friendly relations with Russia, and expressed her hope for further progress in the fruitful cooperation between our countries and scientific communities.
V.N. Glinskikh and Xing Shanping exchanging gifts with each other
Head of the Laboratory of Precambrian Paleontology and Stratigraphy of IPGG SB RAS Dr. Dmitry Grazhdankin and Professor Zhang Xinliang from NWU spoke about current research projects jointly implemented by IPGG SB RAS and Northwestern University. Thus far, the joint research activities have been limited to the fields of paleontology and stratigraphy, bur the scientists expect the topics of joint works to expand in the near future.
The meeting culminated with the signing of the scientific cooperation agreement between the Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics SB RAS and Northwestern University. Vyacheslav N. Glinskikh, Director of IPGG SB RAS and Sun Qingwei, President of NWU, signed the document. After that, the participants of the ceremony exchanged their gifts and the hosts bid farewell to the Chinese delegation.
