The Academic Tournament, an intellectual competition held by Rosneft as part of the IT Marathon 2024 took place early in December in Moscow. Young researchers of the Laboratory of Digital Rock Physics, IPGG SB RAS, that became the winners are: research scientist Dmitry Prokhorov, Ph D (phys.-math.), and Veronika Chepelenkova, jr research scientist. The results of their work presented at the competition was the prototype of a unique software algorithms created at IPGG SB RAS.

The tournament participants were engaged in solving the generalized Fok-Stefanescu problem related to modeling the stationary electric field in a piecewise-homogeneous isotropic medium with plane parallel and coaxial-cylindrical boundaries.

As a statement, the participants were given three data sets for testing, debugging and verification of the algorithms developed within the frames of the competition, as follows: (i) test data set with known parameters of the simulated medium; (ii) data set representing the forward modeling results without variations; (iii) synthetic data with variations for additional verification of the developed algorithms.

According to Dr. Vadim Lisitsa, Head of the Digital Rock Physics Laboratory, IPGG SB RAS, at the tournament, the lab researchers presented an algorithm allowing solving the tasks posed. In fact, while solving the task within the competition, the IPGG’s young scientist have developed preliminary version of the software that can be used for solving everyday tasks of the oil and gas industry.

In case Rosneft places an order with IPGG SB RAS, the team is ready to finalize this conceptual version of the developed software.

Congratulations and best wishes for continued success!
