On May, 8, employees of the A.A. Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics (IPGG SB RAS) and the V.S. Sobolev Institute of Geology and Mineralogy (IGM SB RAS) held a traditional rally in honor of Victory Day in the Veterans Square laid out on May 8, 1980, by participants of the Great Patriotic War working at the then Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

The rally participants gathered there to commemorate Victory day by paying tribute to those who defended the freedom and independence of our Motherland, all those who forged victory in the rear, supplying the front with food and ammunition, and those who rebuilt the destroyed country in the difficult post-war years. The oldest participant shared some stories about the fate of their relatives who fought or worked during the Great Patriotic War. The parallels with the present times suggested themselves.

Among the speakers were Academician Mikhail Epov, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vyacheslav Glinskikh (RAS corr, member), Director of IPGG SB RAS, Vladimir Kontorovich, RAS corr, member, Sergei Smirnov, Dr Sci (geol-mineral.), Vladimir Gruznov, Dr Sci (tech.), Andrey Sidorenko, Chief Engineer IPGG SB RAS.

The children caught up in the turmoil of war (“war children”) also took part in the rally. Genrietta Pisareva, who worked at the IPGG SB RAS during 1958-2018, told us how children performed in hospitals in front of the wounded soldiers with poems and songs; what Novosibirsk looked like at the time of the war, and how May 9, 1945 was celebrated. Yuri Tesakov, one of the oldest employees of IPGG SB RAS, Dr Sci (geol-mineral.), shared his memories of childhood during the Great Patriotic War and how the people cheered the great news of the end of the war.

At the end of the rally, the staff of the two institutes laid flowers at the stele "In memory of the perished, for the health of the living" There are two new surnames engraved on the stele over the last two years: Grigory Makarov (IPGG SB RAS), and Sergey Golubkov (IGM SB RAS) who died heroically while performing combat missions in the zone of Special Military Operation. Their names are immortalized in stone in the Veterans Square, to be a reminder to future generations of enduring values - dedication, a sense of duty and selfless service to the Motherland.
