LATE ORDOVICIAN—EARLY SILURIAN STRATIGRAPHY AND FOSSIL FAUNAS IN NORTHWEST TARIM

Presenter: Dr. Yuchen Zhang, Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences

This lecture focuses on the Late Ordovician to early Silurian stratigraphy, fossil faunas, palaeoclimate and tectonic evolution in the Kalpin and Wushi areas of northwestern Tarim Basin. It systematically revises and subdivides key lithostratigraphic units including the Yingan, Arisu, Terekawat, Yakrik and Yabage formations, establishes high-resolution biostratigraphic frameworks based on graptolites, conodonts, chitinozoans and brachiopods, and clarifies their spatial distribution, thickness variation and stratigraphic correlation. Geochemical CIA analysis reveals palaeoweathering and climatic cooling-warming events before the Late Ordovician Mass Extinction (LOME). Brachiopod faunal affinity analysis demonstrates close palaeobiogeographic links among Tarim, South China and Central Asia. The study defines the Ordovician–Silurian boundary sequence of the Xikeer Bed, elaborates fossil assemblages and sedimentary discontinuities across the boundary, and further discusses the coupling relationship between climate change, sedimentary processes and faunal turnover. Tectonic reconstructions reveal the Late Katian as a critical transition period for regional tectonic settings, providing important new evidence for regional stratigraphic division, palaeogeography reconstruction and petroleum geological evaluation in the Tarim Basin.
