Laboratory of Paleozoic Stratigraphy and Paleontology
paleozoic
The Laboratory of Paleozoic Paleontology and Stratigraphy was founded by academician Boris S. Sokolov within the Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG), Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1958. In the early 70es, the laboratory researchers were successively split into two groups, which ultimately led to creation of two laboratories for: Precambrian Paleontology and Stratigraphy (headed by Vsevolod V. Khomentovsky, PhD), and Paleontology of Plankton and Benthic Algae (with Professor Alexander M. Obut acting as its head, who was succeeded by Evgeny A. Yolkin, Dr Sc. (geol.-mineral.) in 1984). Viktor N. Dubatolov, Dr Sc. (geol.-mineral.) oversaw activities of these research groups from 1977 to 1989. In 1989, these were transformed into the Lower Paleozoic Laboratory run by Yury I. Tesakov, Dr Sc (geol.-mineral.) and Upper Paleozoic Laboratory run by E. A. Yolkin Dr Sc. (geol.-mineral.).
The structural reorganizations put in place in 1997 resulted in separation of the Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics SB RAS from the United Institute of Geology, Geophysics and Mineralogy SB RAS, and creating in its wake the Laboratory of Paleozoic Paleontology and Stratigraphy (in its modern form) on the basis of a merger of the two abovementioned laboratories and part of the Micropaleontology laboratory.
According to the Institute’s strategic plan of development, the laboratory’s priority line of research set out in Program 27.2 is defined as: " Siberian sedimentary basins and naphthidogenesis: their evolution during different periods of the Earth's history; regularities in hydrocarbon generation, migration, accumulation and conservation", which is a part of Integrated Program 27.2 “Stratigraphy, biogeochronology and typification of ecosystem reconstructions in the Proterozoic-Phanerozoic history of the sedimentary basins of Siberia, their correlation with global environmental changes, sedimentation processes and naphthidogenesis epochs” intended for the Division of Paleontology and Stratigraphy of IPGG and “Stratigraphy and paleobiogeography of the Proterozoic and Paleozoic basins of Siberia, ecosystem reconstructions, their correlation with global environmental changes, sedimentation processes and naphthidogenesis epochs” specifically for Project 27.2.1:
.
The project encompasses the following fields of scientific research:
evolution of marine ecosystems during the Early and Middle Paleozoic;
ecosystem-scale substantiation of global, regional and local stratigraphic charts;
identification of chorological differentiation patterns for diverse ecological fauna communities and for some groups of microfossils which provide paleoenvironmental indicators illustrating biogeographic changes due to geodynamic processes,
substantiation of new-generation regional stratigraphic charts for Siberia;
detailed biostratigraphic division and refined correlation of productive Paleozoic strata within the West Siberian petroleum province.
At the present time, the paleontological research carried out by the laboratory staff is focused on the following Paleozoic fossil group: archeocyaths, trilobites, graptolites, brachiopods, corals, conodonts, radiolarians, SSF, algae.
Most of the research is conducted in collaboration with the Laboratory of Micropaleontology and the Laboratory of Precambrian Paleontology and Stratigraphy of IPGG SB RAS, as well as within individual lines of research in partnership with other academic institutions and industry, primarily with the Siberian Research Institute of Geology, Geophysics and Mineral Resources (SNIGGiMS) of the Ministry of Natural Resources.
