For porous media whose constituents' properties vary appreciably, higher-order terms in the governing equations beyond those in classical continuum mechanics are required. Negative values of Poisson's ratio have thus been found and identified as a special feature of porous media since there lacks appropriate relations for the wave velocities in terms of the material properties.
