Summary: We use wave packets or "curvelets" for the purpose of migration velocity analysis using annihilators derived from the wave-equation angle transform. Wave packets can be used to represent wave-equation derived common-image gathers as well as provide geometrical information that can be further utilized in "ray"-geometrical analysis, which is exploited, here, in the context of reflection tomography. We propose a new semblance criterium for the common-image gathers based on the orientation of wave packets (as an alternative to the residual moveout). Then we apply linear perturbation theory to the geometry of the angle transform in order to derive formulas for the background velocity update
