The paper presents brief review of the Russian and international initiatives for digitizing archival issues of the journals. We analyzed availability of electronic archives of the Russian journals as illustrated by Earth Sciences serials. Although the depth of both available metadata of full texts is insufficient, the number of archives has been increased. Possible ways to preparing and presentation of metadata and full texts in open access are given using examples of two leading Russian Earth Sciences journals "Russian Geology and Geophysics" and "Journal of Mining Institute". We concluded that academic libraries should take the main responsibilities for preparing digital archives of scientific journals.
