Dickinsonia is an iconic fossil of the Ediacaran Period (635-539 Ma), representing one of the earliest complex multicellular organisms. The study of Dickinsonia fossils from the Konovalovka Member of the Cherny (or Chernyi) Kamen Formation, Sylvitsa Group, Central Urals, has led to the identification of a new species: Dickinsonia densa. This species is characterized by a higher density of units per millimetre and a smaller relative deltoidal unit length compared with the previously known species D. costata and D. tenuis. Specimens of D. densa are relatively small, ranging from 4 to 65 mm, with a population dominated by juveniles. They exhibit well-defined bilateral symmetry. Cluster analysis confirmed the unique status of the Ural population, forming a separate cluster alongside a few specimens from Australia. To investigate the preservation and taphonomic history of D. densa, optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) mapping were used. These techniques provided detailed insights into the fossil's structure and composition. Raman spectroscopy identified carbonaceous material along the fossil margins, while XRF mapping highlighted localized elemental enrichments, including sulfur and iron, particularly at the margins of the fossils. These findings suggest that microbial processes, such as sulfate reduction, may have played a role during the early diagenetic stage, contributing to the preservation of the fossil. Dickinsonia densa provides a valuable taxonomic and taphonomic window into the composition and structure of the world population of Dickinsonia.
