Rapid growth in the number of Russian universities' journals in the last two decades requires closer attention to new serials. They enable one to evaluate scientific achievements of universities and the state of academic publishing, study collaboration between university and industry based on co-authorship and editorship, as well as conduct the other scientometric assessment. Two important questions include (1) quantitative evaluation of the ratio between parent and external papers in university's journals, and (2) detecting the role of parent journals in general publication flow of a university. Except for obtaining common data on the main dissemination channels for university's scientific results, the study of those problems makes it possible to assess the level of openness of the system of university's serials affecting readers' interest in journals and their rankings. Moreover, the results may lead to additional basis for further study of publication ethics issues. This paper uses a large sample of 496 Russian journals indexed in the List of Higher Attestation Commission which were launched by Federal universities, National Research universities, and Basic universities. We demonstrated both typical use of journals by parent universities, and specific differences depending on types of universities.
